Teams launch from Quito, Ecuador

By Dan Wedgwood

The Pioneers heading off into the wilds of Latin America have launched from Quito and have their Beetles aimed at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The Ruta del Sol will be a long old journey whichever route they choose…

The teams met last week and on Saturday 2nd February met the local Ecuadorian charity Fepso for a football match and lunch. It’s customary when an Adventurists' adventure launches that a local team takes on the visitors in a game of cricket or football.

So far the local teams have always delivered a lesson for the away team and thoroughly thrashed the Adventurists despite sometimes fielding teams with an average age of a decade younger!

In Ecuador however, the history books were almost rewritten when the Ruta teams very nearly secured the first victory against the local team… Matt Clixby of Team Road Pirates describes the game in his excellent blog:

“After the presentation we had a football match against some local children at 2900m. We were 2 down at half time but managed to get it back to 6-6 in the second half before, letting in a last minute goal. The adventurists have never beaten a local team, so we very nearly made it into the history books.”

It’s not just about being beaten at sports though, Matt’s blog also describes the first couple of days of this mighty Ruta del Sol, and a fine blog it is…
