Shock win in Goa for Rickshaw Run beach football team

By Dan Wedgwood
No Rickshaw Run is complete without a sporting contest between the Runners and a local team. It’s tradition and no surprise that the travelling team, formed when they arrive at the venue usually get a good shoe-ing from the established local team.

Earlier this year the Spring Rickshaw Runners caused a mighty upset by actually beating the local Cricket team in Shillong at the start of the adventure. When they arrived in Goa the normal order was swiftly restored with a sweaty game of football narrowly won by the local team. Yesterday the Autumn run football team went up ahead the Goan state’s finest. The location was Colva in Goa, and the sport was beach football.

On the stunning palm fringed beach the conditions were hot and humid and the chances for the Rickshaw Run team slim. The local team was none other than the actual Goan State Football Team!

Somehow the predicted outcome got completely turned on its head and the Runners got off to an early lead. What they lacked in finesse they made up in perseverance and the use of multiple substitutes definitely helped the cause with regular fresh legs!

The final score was an incredible 4-1 to the Rickshaw Runners – a splendid result and another shock result for the sporting history books.
