Rickshaw Run round-up: best of the SMS updates after 5 days

By Dan Wedgwood
"Wild", "been driven into already" and "monkeys everywhere" are some of the highlights of the SMS updates the teams have been sending in direct from their rickshaws as they hurtle north! Plotting their progress on the Live Updates page of the Rickshaw Run website, the teams’ have been doing a grand job of filing reports from their mobiles. Here’s a round up of the best so far. Team Chitty Chitty Bhangra, from England, said on the first day: "Been driven into already but no damage to us or chitty!" By Day 3 they had been unlucky with some bat poo: "Up early, breakfast under a tree, crapped on by fruit bats and then ran out of petrol. Ok now." The next day there were treated to an unexpected police encounter: "Just had first run in with the fuzz. Didn't like the look of us so we had to go to the police station and have our docs nosed through. Back on the road again now." Talking about getting into the swing of things on Day 2, team Cumin or Goan (see what they did there!?) were penning almost poetic updates about feeling as if they were driving down the wrong way of a motorway: "What the roads take out of the soul is returned two fold in the warmth of the people we meet along the way." Another contender for the adventurists quotes of wisdom that will be passed on to future generations is this simple but effective one-liner from Tuks of Hazard on day 4: "just because it's a one way street doesn't mean they are all going in the one direction." But it was team Just around the Korma who sent this message from Hydrabad who brought the updates page back down to earth with a jolt: "made it here after a long day on the road. Nearly had a head-on with a truck, no more night driving 4 this team! Beer and sleep are needed." Overall the accolade for most entertaining update so far would probably have to go to team Cumin or Goan, who made a shocking discovery just today, on day 5: "ground to an alarming halt outside a village called Kaikalum. Ghandi started to complain. Tambaram(Tamsyn) shouted loudly that 'we're losing power, Jupta (jamie)!' before dramatically swerving off the road. After much pulling at hoses, filling with fuel, tearing at air filter (all ably performed by the assembled masses) we discovered the issue. We'd left the handbrake on. It's life on the edge this adventure business." Tomorrow we will take a look through the blogs sent back from internet café in all corners of India and bring you the highlights of the glorious mayhem playing out on the highways, byways and rocky dirt tracks…
