Goa’s Minister of Tourism launches the Autumn Rickshaw Run

By Dan Wedgwood
The third and final edition of the Rickshaw Run of 2009 – the Autumnal affair – was launched today by Francisco Xavier Pacheco – the Minister of Tourism in Goa.

61 tiny and ridiculously unsuitable auto-rickshaws and their brave teams lined up at Colva sea front for the start of the two week adventure all the way to Pokhara, Nepal.

The teams have spent the last couple of days test driving, pimping their ‘shaws, playing (and winning) a game of beach football, and sampling a fair few Kingfishers! Now they’re well on their way and already sending in updates to the website.

You can follow the teams on the Live Updates page and read their tales of glorious mayhem as they get lost, stuck and in all sorts of pickles.

Team Dukes of Hyderabad have been posting updates from the road, and described their first day of no back-up three wheel adventuring:

“What a day, 60 screaming rickshaws depart Goa and within 25km the Captain Darjeeling team have broken down at least 20 times! Thankfully they are not the only ones. Currently standing at the taxi rickshaw rank in Panjit with 50 screaming experts on rickshaw engineering!

A truly hysterical sight, but today is turning into an unmitigated cock up and we have covered 50km and gone about three mm up the map. India is looking VERY BIG all of a sudden!”
