Finish Line Arrival Ceremony

By Dan Wedgwood

The sun beat down on a dusty crowd of misfits as the teams gathered in the centre of Ulaanbaatar for the Mongol Rally 2008 Finish Line celebrations on 16th August.

As the numbers grew and the volume rose a very excellent band of contemporary-traditional musicians (if there is such a thing) blasted out their tunes. Spirits were rather high and beer flowed as the afternoon sped by. Awards were announced for…

“Best Updates” – awarded to Bataared Tomatoes for his mighty fine and regular updates

“Largest non-functional item” – award delayed till the bath or the phone box arrived

“Best Fundraising” – given to Mad Minx and the Toolkit for continuing to raise huge sums

“Rally Legends” – the big one, awarded to the Suicide Badgers for saving the arses of so many of their fellow teams.

The brews continued to flow and the party decamped to a nightclub where the revelry continued until the sun rose again on a dishevelled mess.

It’s safe to say that the day was as amazing as the following morning was painful. Not all the teams have made it and the rally is still very much alive so we are having another night of mayhem on Saturday the 23rd and will keep on welcoming the teams into the bosom of UB for many days to come.
