An incredible project in a small village called San Mateo in Ecuador has been named as an official charity of the 2008 Ruta.
Implemented by the Fundación Ecuatoriana de la Psoriasis (FEPSO) the project aims to help build a sustainable community in Ecuador (South America) for people affected by the condition Ichthyosis.
Ichthyosis is a term used to describe the continual scaling of the skin. It comes from a Greek word "ichthys" which means fish; although not all affected people have fish-like scales.
The condition is quite rare and can be inherited (genetic or congenital) or develop later in life (acquired).
The large majority of sufferers are rejected by mainstream society for their physical appearance and therefore many do not have the opportunity to study or work. This Ichthyosis project will be based on communitarian aid; it’s aim is to create a community by all and for all.
